Visual-field examination (perimetry)
During the visual-field examination, the outer and inner boundaries of the visual field – the area one sees without moving one’s head or eyes – and the sensitivity of visual function outside the fixation point are evaluated.
When is a visual-field measurement useful?
- Neurological conditions such as stroke, brain tumour
- Impaired blood flow in the eye
How is a visual-field measurement conducted?
Today, the visual-field examination is generally also conducted with computer perimetry. Here the patient sees either externally introduced or fixed, briefly flashing points of light, and s/he tells the ophthalmologist as soon as s/he notices them.
