Posterior capsule opacity

Following cataract surgery and the implantation of the clear artificial lens, the remaining posterior lens capsule may become cloudy and a so-called posterior capsule opacity may develop. This is unrelated to the actual cataract.

What are the symptoms of a posterior capsule opacity?

Months or even years after cataract surgery, visual deterioration – in the form of ‘cloudy vision’ – can occur.

How is a posterior capsule opacity treated?

The Nd:YAG laser is used for treatment. It can be used to treat the clouded posterior lens capsule without the need to surgically open the eye. The treatment is painless and takes about 3 minutes.
