Our eyelids assume an important function in protecting our eyes from injury, foreign bodies and drying out. Diseases of the eyelids, e.g. misalignment or inflammation, can lead to a worsening of this protective function. This can lead to eye conditions ranging from the simple sensation of a foreign body to severe inflammation or ulceration.
The most common diseases include drooping eyelids (ptosis) and baggy eyelids (dermatochalasis) or rolling of the lids either inwards (entropion) or outwards (ectropion). There are also tumours, benign changes – such as a chalazion – or malignant changes such as basal cell carcinoma. Eyelid surgery is often a cosmetic intervention and is usually not assumed by health insurance providers. The correction of dermatochalasis is therefore possible via a small, gentle procedure and is extremely effective.
